The Lota boardwalk begins beside Bill Lamond Park and leads to the mouth of Lota Creek, where thick walls of mangroves give a real feeling of remoteness only minutes from the street. It is also a handy short cut to Thornside, with a walking trail continuing on the far side of the bridge.

Rich silt, and shelter from the waves provided by the bay islands, make ideal growing conditions for mangroves along this stretch of Moreton Bay. They help stabilise the coastline and are a sheltered nursery for fish and prawns, which is why they are protected under Queensland’s fisheries legislation.
Birdwatching
Every summer, thousands of migratory wading birds arrive in Moreton Bay from as far away as Siberia and Mongolia, among them the ruddy turnstone and the Mongolian dotterel. Spoonbills, ibis and sandpipers can be seen all year round. Visit around mid to low tide to watch waders feeding on the flats, or early in the morning, when the canopy stirs with birdlife.
